We wish everyone a Happy and Safe Carnival 2019! The following tips have been provided by our valued stakeholder the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service
Members of the public are advised when attending Carnival functions or activities to:
Before the Fete / Show
- Agree on a selected meeting place in case you get separated. The ideal meeting place should be a clearly noticeable landmark.
- Make prior arrangements for transportation to and from events.
- Designate a driver who will not be consuming alcohol.
- Plan to travel in groups of friends or relatives.
- Ensure that you have
small change in TT currency. Try to avoid having or revealing large amounts of cash. Conceal wallets or purses. - Leave expensive jewelry at home/wear minimal jewelry.
- Consider leaving your expensive smartphone at home and get an affordable “Carnival Phone”.
Care of Children
- Parents and guardians are reminded of their responsibility to ensure that children under the age of eighteen years have adequate supervision.
- Parents and guardians should teach children their names, the names of parents and guardians and a contact number in case of emergency.
- For younger children or children who may have learning issues, parents should ensure that the identification mentioned, along with an address is securely affixed to and concealed in their clothing.
- Children should not be allowed to go to public washrooms or other places unless accompanied by a responsible adult.
Securing Your Homes
- When leaving your homes please ensure that you secure your premises and refrain from leaving keys in areas such as
mail boxes , beneathdoor mats and flower pots.
Securing Your Vehicles
- Always obey the traffic laws of Trinidad and Tobago or directions of police officers and traffic wardens in uniform.
- When driving to fetes and other activities please follow the instructions of uniformed officials bearing in mind that special regulations may have been enacted to restrict access to certain roads; do not overcrowd your vehicles.
- Please ensure that your vehicle is properly secured at all times.
- Do not walk away from your car without activating your alarm system.
- Use paid Car Parks whenever possible.
- If you observe any suspicious activity around your vehicle notify the police.
- Remember you should not leave your vehicle unattended whilst the keys are in the ignition or if the engine is running. Additionally, you should refrain from leaving valuable items visible in your vehicles.
- Remember it is an
offence to travel in open trays of pick-ups, vans or trucks. This is for your own safety.
For Visitors
- Ensure that you have
small change in TT currency. Try to avoid having or revealing large amounts of cash. Conceal wallets or purses. - Visitors to Trinidad and Tobago are also reminded that they should always carry a form of identification on their person when attending activities.
At the Fete / Show
- Have a Great Time!
- Do not consume alcohol in excess.
- Do not accept drinks from strangers. Please do not leave your drinks unattended.
- Remember that it is an
offence to consume illegal drugs.
After the Fete / Show
- When leaving a Carnival event
ensure that your group walks you to your vehicle especially if the vehicle is parked in an unlit or lonely area. - If you find yourself in a dangerous situation your first choice and best option should be to escape if possible. Trust your instincts and listen to what your intuition tells you. Take all precautions necessary to protect yourselves.
- Avoid getting into a taxi alone. If you must, you can text the number to a friend or relative and if possible a description of the driver.
- Do not accept drinks from strangers. Please do not leave your drinks unattended.
- Should your child be missing please find a police officer or station and lodge a report.
